Fielden Square was named after John Fielden (1784-1849), who started life as a mill worker, eventually opening his own works and becoming a wealthy businessman. 'Honest John' Fielden became a Radical MP for Oldham four times in the early 19th century. He was responsible for many social changes and improving the conditions of his workers.

The statue was originally erected by the Town Hall in 1875, and then moved to Fielden Square in 1890. It was removed to Centre Vale Park in 1939; this dates the postcard to pre-1939.
