During the early stages of World War I the armed services were manned by a flow of more than 3 million enthusiastic volunteers, but by the summer of 1915 the need for men had become far greater and conscription became necessary, an Act being passed in 1916. This illustration shows some of the local men who had enlisted voluntarily, being marched along with a brass band.
