This collection of early maps and illustrations was brought together with a view to conserving original material, and at the same time bringing it into use for a wider section of the community. The arrangement is by a chronological sequence, in which each map is matched with a view of the town which is as near as possible to the same date. With the two pages opened together, it is easy to compare them and achieve a broad picture of the town at the time. Interspersed with each pair is a half-page containing text relating to the period with details of the map and view. Added to this are several eyewitness accounts from travellers and visitors to Halifax at the time.
The spiral binding was used in order to make it easy to use and display pages separately in schools if so desired.
Dr Alan Betteridge was formerly Archivist with Calderdale District Archives. Derek Bridge was Reference Librarian with Calderdale Public Libraries.
